Ein „System-of-Systems“ (SoS) ist eine Menge an interagierenden Systemen, von denen jedes einzelne System in sich selbst als System betrachtet werden kann, wobei

  • jedes System unabhängig agieren kann und einen eigenen Zweck besitzt
  • die individuellen Systeme der Menge unabhängig organisiert werden, um ihre Zwecke zu erfüllen
  • die Systemkombination Ergebnisse liefert, die von einzelnen Systemen nicht erreicht werden können
