Zum Produktlebenszyklus gehören von der Geschäftsidee bis zum Serienanlauf die Elemente strategische Produktplanung, Produktentwicklung sowie Produktionssystementwicklung, welche unter dem Begriff Produktentstehung zusammengefasst werden.

Weitere Phasen des Lebenszyklus sind Fertigung, Distribution, Nutzung und letztlich Rücknahme des Produkts.
